Matthew (40)
Matthew 3
| 1 |
In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,
|
| 2 |
And saying,
Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. |
| 3 |
For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying,
The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. |
| 4 |
And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,
|
| 6 |
And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

| 7 |
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them,
O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? |
| 8 |
Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: |
| 9 |
And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. |
| 10 |
And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. |
| 11 |
I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: |
| 12 |
Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. |
| 13 |
Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
|
| 14 |
But John forbad him, saying,
I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? |
| 15 |
And Jesus answering said unto him,
Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness.Then he suffered him. |
Matthew 11

Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,

And said unto him,
Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? |
| 4 |
Jesus answered and said unto them,
Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: |
| 5 |
The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. |
| 6 |
And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me. |
| 7 |
And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John,
What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? |
| 8 |
But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. |
| 9 |
But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. |
| 10 |
For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. |
| 11 |
Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. |
| 12 |
And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. |
| 13 |
For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. |

For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil. |

This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. |

For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife.

It is not lawful for thee to have her. |

And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.

And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

Matthew 17

Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. |

But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. |

But the angel said unto him,
Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. |

And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. |

For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb. |

And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. |

And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. |

And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. |

And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. |

Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.

And his mother answered and said,
Not so; but he shall be called John. |

And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.

And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying,
His name is John.And they marvelled all. |

To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. |

And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying,

Exact no more than that which is appointed you. |

And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying,
And what shall we do?And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages. |
| 15 |
And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;

John answered, saying unto them all,
I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: |
| 17 |

And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.

Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

He must increase, but I must decrease. |

He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all. |

And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony. |

He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true. |

For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. |

The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. |
